Continental Africa and nearby islands are home to 54 countries holding a total population of about 1 billion (1,000,000,000) people – making it the second most populated continent on earth.

There are numerous islands surrounding the African continent most of them count as a intrinsic part of the mother continent. Among these islands, most notable is Madagascar, a large island of 587,041 squared km and home to some of the most unique ecological phenomenon on earth.
