The Americas
The American continent is sometimes referred to as a single continent and sometimes it is divided into 2 or 3 subcontinents (IE, North America, South America and Central America). The name of the continent is thought to be derived from the name of the Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci, and for centuries it was also widely known as the New World.
The entire land area of the Americas is about 42.5 million squared km (28.4% of the world's land area) and the population is just around 900 million people (13.5% of the planet's entire population). When viewed as a single continent – the Americas are the second largest continent (and not Africa), and only by a small margin.
