The Americas

The American continent is sometimes referred to as a single continent and sometimes it is divided into 2 or 3 subcontinents (IE, North America, South America and Central America). The name of the continent is thought to be derived from the name of the Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci, and for centuries it was also widely known as the New World.

The entire land area of the Americas is about 42.5 million squared km (28.4% of the world's land area) and the population is just around 900 million people (13.5% of the planet's entire population). When viewed as a single continent – the Americas are the second largest continent (and not Africa), and only by a small margin.

North America

North America has a land size of 24.7 million squared km and is home to 23 countries, most prominent being Canada, Mexico and the United States of America. Other countries include mostly the surrounding island countries such as Cuba, Jamaica and Costa Rica, as well as Central American countries such as Panama and Belize. The combined population size is around 530 million people, the majority of which live in the continental USA.
