Australia & Oceania Maps
Australia is the smallest continent in the world (considered by some only as a very large island) and is the home of just one country: Commonwealth of Australia. The total land area of the Australian continent is about 7.6 million squared km together with several island groups surrounding the continent. Total population is about 22.5 million people, making Australia the 7th least densely populated country in the world. Because of its marginal size, many include Australia as part of a larger region called Oceania. This region includes (besides Australia) New Zealand, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and a few other Sovereign islands, as well as numerous non-sovereign small islands and territories mostly under US, French or British sovereignty. Like Asia, most Oceania borders are defined by political influences and not by geographical characteristics. |
