The Americas
The American continent is sometimes referred to as a single continent and sometimes it is divided into 2 or 3 subcontinents (IE, North America, South America and Central America). The name of the continent is thought to be derived from the name of the Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci, and for centuries it was also widely known as the New World. The entire land area of the Americas is about 42.5 million squared km (28.4% of the world's land area) and the population is just around 900 million people (13.5% of the planet's entire population). When viewed as a single continent – the Americas are the second largest continent (and not Africa), and only by a small margin. South AmericaThe South American continent stretches a land size of almost 18 million squared km and is the home of only 12 countries making it the least populated continent (385 million people) with the obvious exception of Antarctica. South America has an impressive history that is being shadowed by the Spanish and Portuguese heritage and the largest, most populated and most influential country in the continent is Brazil. |
